Hoot Gibson's Hangar: Top Gun

Few aviators embody the love of flight like Robert L. Gibson, known as “Hoot.” A decorated U.S. Navy fighter pilot, he excelled in aircraft carrier operations, logging hundreds of landings. His passion extended to air racing, where precision and speed are key. Gibson built and flew his own homebuilt air racer, showcasing engineering skill. His dedication to flight led him beyond Earth as a NASA astronaut and Space Shuttle commander, flying five missions and commanding four, leading crews and operations in orbit.

David Huffman, owner of a 1958 Grumman C-1A Trader, and Carl Brown, a former Navy aircrewman and longtime EAA volunteer, shared the aircraft's history. Built for carrier onboard delivery (COD), the C-1A could carry nine passengers or 4,000 pounds of cargo, with 824 arrested landings and 190 catapult launches. Restored over 11 years and 13,000 man-hours, it features powerful Wright R-1820 engines, a rudder boost system, and unique capabilities, including serving as a multi-engine trainer and carrying a nuclear device. Huffman recounted flying experiences, including handling an in-flight engine failure during an airshow. Brown, who flew aircraft 146044 as an aviation mechanic in the 1970s, described the Trader’s logistical missions—transporting cargo, personnel, and medical patients in the Caribbean and supporting the Atlantic Fleet.
